The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has commenced an indefinite nationwide strike today, Monday, March 9.

The industrial action stems from what leadership describes as “prolonged and frustrating” delays in implementing agreed-upon conditions of service.

The strike is expected to paralyze operations across several key sectors, including:
National Ministries
Government Departments and Agencies (MDAs)
Local Government Offices.

The strike proceeds despite a direct order from the National Labour Commission (NLC).

The NLC had previously directed the association to suspend the action and return to the negotiation table.

However, CLOGSAG leadership has instructed its members to defy the directive, arguing that the government has consistently failed to provide tangible results or honor its commitments as an employer.

“We are dealing with our employer, and we expect that our employer should be communicating with us,” stated Edmund Aquaye, CLOGSAG Public Relations Officer.

Speaking to Citi News, Aquaye emphasized that the association has been met with “radio silence” since serving the strike notice last week.

“Since last Thursday, when we announced the strike, the National Assembly Council of CLOGSAG has still not heard anything from our employer,” Aquaye noted.

“For that matter, our strike is still on. We are entreating all CLOGSAG members, wherever they are, not to go to work on March 9.”

Root Causes of the Unrest
The core of the dispute lies in the welfare and working conditions of the administrative workforce.

Officials argue that the delay in implementing the new conditions of service has led to widespread frustration, with members feeling their contributions to the public sector are being undervalued.

As of Monday morning, administrative desks in several regions remain empty, signaling a significant disruption to public services until a resolution is reached.
