A chaotic scene unfolded Tuesday morning at the bustling Kotokuraba Market when a container truck loaded with rice lost control and plowed into a taxi, pinning it against a nearby building.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred during peak market hours.
The truck reportedly suffered a mechanical failure or lost control, striking the rear of a vehicle before slamming into a taxi directly in front of it.
The force of the impact crushed the taxi against a permanent structure, trapping the occupants inside the mangled wreckage.
The Assemblyman for the Kotokuraba Electoral Area, Baba Ali, described the horrific scene to the press.
”The truck suddenly hit the car in front of it before smashing into the taxi.
The impact crushed the vehicles against the building, leaving the passengers trapped inside.”
Bystanders and market-goers rushed to the scene immediately following the “thunderous crash,” working together to pull the victims from the debris before emergency services arrived.
Four occupants of both the taxi and the truck sustained life-threatening injuries.
They were rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), where they are currently in critical condition.
Hospital sources indicate the victims are being treated for severe fractures and suspected internal bleeding.
The local police have since impounded the truck and cleared the roadway to restore the flow of traffic.
