The government has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the Sahel region, following a series of coordinated terrorist attacks in Mali that left several people dead, including the country’s Defence Minister.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 27, 2026, the government confirmed that the attacks, which occurred on Saturday, April 25, targeted multiple military installations, including sites in the capital, Bamako.
Among those killed was Defence Minister General Sadio Camara, along with military personnel and civilians.
Ghana extended its condolences to the government and people of Mali, describing the incident as a tragic development.
The statement also wished those injured a speedy recovery.
“Violent extremism must have no place in our world, and we must step up collective efforts to end this horror,” the release emphasised, calling for stronger international collaboration to combat terrorism in the region.
The government has meanwhile issued a safety advisory to Ghanaian nationals residing in Mali, urging them to exercise heightened caution.
Citizens have been advised to limit non-essential movement and maintain regular contact with the Ghanaian Embassy in Bamako.
Additionally, Ghanaian traders and drivers who frequently travel along trade routes linking the two countries have been strongly advised to suspend their journeys until further notice, as Malian authorities work to stabilise the situation.
The Ministry indicated that the government is in close coordination with Malian authorities and will provide updates as conditions improve to support the safe resumption of cross-border trade.
Reaffirming its commitment to the safety of its citizens abroad, the government assured Ghanaians in Mali that their security and well-being remain a top priority.
