Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Her Excellency Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson, has called on the Ghanaian diaspora to rethink the traditional approach to remittances, urging a shift from family-focused financial support to remittances that drive investments in Ghana’s economy.
During an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Milton Keynes, she emphasized the vital role played by the diaspora in shaping Ghana’s progress, not only through financial contributions but also through the transfer of skills, knowledge, and values.
“Wherever we find ourselves in the world, we carry Ghana in our hearts. This evening is an opportunity to listen, to connect, to strengthen the bond between the High Commission and the vibrant Ghanaian community. The government of Ghana recognizes the immense contribution of the diaspora to national development.”
Highlighting the critical role of remittances in supporting families and strengthening the economy, Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson urged the community to think beyond immediate family needs and consider the long-term impact of their financial support.
“Your remittances contribute to the economy, but we should shift from remittances that just take care of the family to remittances that bring in investments into Ghana,” she said.
She stressed that while the traditional role of remittances in supporting loved ones remains invaluable, the diaspora has the capacity to do more by channeling their contributions toward businesses, startups, and development projects that could provide long-term benefits for the country.
“Beyond your financial contributions, your knowledge transfer, mentorship, and representation of Ghana’s values abroad are equally invaluable.”
Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson also reassured the community of the High Commission’s commitment to serving their needs, whether in matters of consular services, investment facilitation, or cultural and business engagements, while emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration among Ghanaians in the UK, urging them to build strong associations, support one another, and nurture the next generation to embrace their Ghanaian heritage while excelling abroad.
“Our mission is here to support you, whether in matters of consular services, investment facilitation, youth engagement, or strengthening business and cultural ties between Ghana and the UK,” she assured.
