Government has announced the renaming of Kotoka International Airport.
With immediate effect, the nation’s primary aviation gateway will revert to its original name: Accra International Airport.
The announcement was made via a press statement issued by the Ministry of Transport on February 23, 2026.
According to the Ministry, the decision stems from a desire to restore the airport to its “former and internationally recognized name” used prior to its redesignation in 1969.
Despite the high-profile name change, the Ministry was quick to reassure the traveling public and international partners that the transition will be purely administrative.
There will be no disruptions to airport operations, safety standards, or scheduled international travel.
Crucially for pilots and travel agents, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) code remains “ACC,” ensuring that global flight tracking and booking systems remain unaffected.
The government is now embarking on a “systematic update” to reflect the new and old identity.
This process will include:
Updating official documentation and statutory instruments.
Replacing physical signage throughout the airport precinct.
Refreshing digital platforms and aviation publications.
Revising all official communication materials.
The facility originally bore the name Accra International Airport until it was renamed in honor of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka following the 1966 coup.
By reverting to the original name, the government aims to utilize a designation that is synonymous with the capital city and recognized globally.
The Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Transport called for the cooperation of all stakeholders and international partners to ensure the transition remains “smooth and seamless.”
