The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced that Ghana’s National Interconnected Transmission System suffered a major power system disturbance in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, resulting in widespread electricity supply interruptions across parts of the country.
According to a statement issued by the company, the incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m., triggering the simultaneous tripping of several electricity generating plants connected to the national grid. The disruption affected the stability of the country’s power transmission system and led to outages in multiple areas.
GRIDCo said it immediately activated its established power system restoration procedures to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible.
The company noted that its engineers and system operators are working around the clock in close collaboration with key stakeholders in the power sector to safely restore power to all affected customers.
“GRIDCo has activated its established system restoration procedures. Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety,” the statement said.
Beyond restoration efforts, the transmission company has also launched a comprehensive technical investigation to establish the exact cause of the disturbance.
While the cause of the incident remains unknown, GRIDCo assured the public that updates will be provided once investigations progress and more information becomes available.
The company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the outage and appealed to the public for patience and understanding as restoration works continue.
“GRIDCo sincerely apologises for the inconvenience and appreciates the patience and understanding of the public during this period. We remain fully committed to restoring supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” the statement added.
GRIDCo serves as Ghana’s national electricity transmission company and is responsible for operating the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS). Incorporated in December 2006, the company oversees the economic dispatch and transmission of electricity from wholesale suppliers, including the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Independent Power Producers (IPPs), to bulk customers and electricity distribution utilities across the country.
The company currently transmits electricity from multiple wholesale power suppliers to bulk customers and distribution utilities nationwide, making it a critical component of Ghana’s power delivery infrastructure.
