The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspected romance scammer, Nana Yaw Bonsu Kwarteng, for allegedly defrauding several women through false promises of marriage, online deception and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.
According to the Police, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly posed as a pastor who conducted online church services on Instagram, where he identified and targeted women.
He reportedly convinced victims that God had revealed they were destined to become his wives, using the claim to gain their trust and establish intimate relationships.
Investigators say the suspect went to great lengths to make his claims appear genuine by meeting the families of some victims and presenting them with promise rings as a symbol of commitment.
The Police further allege that after gaining the confidence of the women, Nana Yaw Bonsu Kwarteng obtained intimate images from some of them and later used those images to blackmail them into sending him money.
Beyond the alleged romance scam, investigators say the suspect introduced some victims to what he described as a lucrative car tyre import business.
He allegedly persuaded them to invest thousands of dollars by claiming the funds were needed for the shipping and clearance of containers of tyres. However, after receiving the money, he reportedly became unreachable.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect’s wife, Sally Akosua Amoasah, was allegedly involved in the scheme.
Police say she received intimate images of some of the victims from her husband and is accused of threatening them.
So far, seven victims have formally reported the matter to the Police, with investigations suggesting that the alleged offences date back to 2021.
Authorities believe there may be more victims and have indicated that investigations remain ongoing.
The two suspects were arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court 1 on charges including conspiracy to commit crime, namely defrauding by false pretences, defrauding by false pretences, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.
The court remanded Nana Yaw Bonsu Kwarteng into Police custody, and he is expected to reappear before the court on August 6, 2026. Sally Akosua Amoasah was granted bail pending the continuation of the case.
The Ghana Police Service has appealed to members of the public who may have fallen victim to similar acts involving the suspect to report to the nearest Police station to assist with ongoing investigations.
Police say they continue to receive complaints from other possible victims as they work to uncover the full extent of the alleged fraud and bring all those responsible to justice.
