Businessman and founder of Engineers and Planners, Ibrahim Mahama has strongly denied claims that he is seeking to acquire the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), describing the allegations as false and malicious.
The denial follows a demonstration by workers of the state-owned aluminium smelter, during which some members of the company’s labour union protested against what they alleged was an attempt to sell VALCO to a private investor.
During the protest, some of the demonstrators mentioned Ibrahim Mahama’s name, claiming he had shown interest in taking over the company.
However, in a statement issued by his Special Aide, Rafik Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama categorically rejected the allegations, insisting that he has neither expressed interest in acquiring VALCO nor submitted any offer to purchase the company.
“The attention of Mr. Ibrahim Mahama has been brought to a demonstration held by the Labour Union of VALCO, during which some demonstrators allege that he is interested in acquiring VALCO. Mr. Ibrahim Mahama has no such interest and has not made any such offer to acquire VALCO,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the allegation forms part of what it described as a series of attempts to tarnish the businessman’s reputation and draw him into unnecessary public controversy.
The statement further defended the integrity of Ibrahim Mahama’s business operations, noting that all companies in which he has interests were either legally established or legitimately acquired and continue to operate in full compliance with Ghana’s laws.
It argued that the longevity of his businesses, which have remained operational through seven successive election cycles, reflects their sound management and adherence to legal and corporate standards.
“The track record of the integrity of the businesses that Mr. Mahama has interest in prove that his businesses are among the best-run operations across the African continent,” the statement added.
It also reaffirmed Ibrahim Mahama’s commitment to Ghana’s economic development through continued investments both within the country and beyond.
The statement stressed that rather than engaging in public exchanges over what it described as unfounded allegations, Ibrahim Mahama has instructed his lawyers to initiate legal proceedings against those responsible for spreading the claims.
“He has instructed his lawyers to take the necessary legal action,” the statement concluded.
The controversy comes amid growing concerns among VALCO workers over the future ownership and management of the strategic aluminium smelter.
The workers’ demonstration was sparked by reports and speculation that the company could be transferred to a private investor, prompting employees to demand transparency from the authorities.
As of the time of filing this report, no official announcement has been made by the government or VALCO regarding any plans to privatise or sell the company. Ibrahim Mahama’s latest statement seeks to distance him from the speculation while signalling his readiness to pursue legal action to protect his reputation.
