The Ghana Police Service has deployed a Special Operations Support Team to Nkwanta in the Oti Region following recent violent attacks in the Nkwanta South Municipality that claimed lives and left several others injured.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Oti Regional Police Headquarters in Dambai, the intensified security intervention forms part of ongoing efforts by the Police Administration to restore calm, maintain law and order, and protect lives and property in the area.
The statement explained that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Friday, June 20, 2026, ordered the deployment of the special security team from the National Police Headquarters in Accra to reinforce local security operations and support ongoing investigations into the attacks.
The Ghana Police Service noted that the additional security presence is expected to strengthen policing activities within the municipality and reassure residents amid growing tensions and security concerns in the area.
“Following the recent attacks in the Nkwanta South Municipality, which resulted in the loss of lives and injuries to several persons, the Ghana Police Service has intensified security measures to restore calm and ensure public safety,” the statement said.
Police authorities further assured residents that security personnel will continue to maintain a strong presence in the municipality to safeguard peace and prevent further disturbances.
The Service also appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate fully with security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could assist ongoing investigations and security operations.
Residents have been encouraged to volunteer information that may help identify perpetrators behind the attacks as police work to bring those responsible to justice.
The statement, signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor of the Public Affairs Unit in the Oti Region, reiterated the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to ensuring peace, security, and stability within the municipality.
“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring peace within the municipality,” the release emphasized.
The latest deployment comes amid heightened concerns over security in parts of the Nkwanta South Municipality following the recent incidents, with authorities determined to prevent any escalation of violence.
