The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh, has called on sawmill operators and timber dealers in Awutu Bawjiase Korlemanto to adopt environmentally responsible practices and safeguard the area’s forest reserve for future generations.
Her appeal came during a sod-cutting ceremony held to mark the commencement of operations by the Sawmills and Timber Dealers Association in the community.
Addressing participants, the MP stressed the importance of preserving the Awutu Senya Forest Reserve, noting its potential for tourism development and long-term ecological benefits.
She urged members of the association to desist from activities that could degrade the forest and instead work closely with the Forestry Commission of Ghana to ensure sustainable operations.
According to her, collaboration with regulatory authorities would help prevent conflicts and promote compliance with environmental standards in the district.
“I am committed to supporting your work, but it must be done in a way that protects our natural resources,” she said.
Chairman of the association, Kwesi Tonful Amissah Baiden, assured the MP of the group’s readiness to operate responsibly.
He pledged that members would adhere to best practices in timber processing and maintain close cooperation with the Forestry Commission to avoid any misunderstandings.
Also speaking at the event, the Chief of Awutu Bawjiase, Nai Kweku Osadu Otabil III, expressed optimism about the economic benefits of the initiative.
He noted that the establishment of the sawmill operations would create employment opportunities for the youth and help reduce unemployment in the area.
The ceremony, held at Awutu Bawjiase Korlemanto, brought together local leaders, industry players, and community members, marking the beginning of what stakeholders hope will be a balance between economic growth and environmental protection.
