The Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda and former Deputy Minister of Health, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has strongly condemned a viral video showing a violent clash involving young men wielding machetes in the streets of Akyem Oda.
The disturbing footage, which has circulated widely on social media, captures three young men engaged in a fierce cutlass fight in broad daylight at the New Station area of Akyem Oda in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents and the general public.
In a statement, Mr. Acquah expressed his unequivocal disapproval of the act, describing it as alien to the values and character of the youth in the area.
“I wish to condemn, without ambiguity, a viral video showing some young men brandishing machetes and engaging in an open fight on the streets of Akyem Oda,” he said.
He noted that the incident has attracted condemnation from people both within and outside the municipality, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
According to the MP, the police have since intervened, arresting some of the individuals involved, while others who sustained serious injuries are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Mr. Acquah urged residents, particularly the youth, to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions in the area.
He emphasized the need to allow law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
“I urge for calmness so this doesn’t escalate into a broader episode that could disturb the peace of Akyem Oda, while the police investigate the cause of this unruly behaviour,” he added.
Authorities are yet to determine the motive behind the violent confrontation, as investigations continue.
