The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, has commenced legal proceedings against founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah, over statements the lawmaker says have defamed his character and reputation.
The three-term New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislator has filed a suit at the High Court in Accra, seeking GH¢10 million in damages over allegations linking him to an alleged plot to attack the pastor’s church.
The case follows comments Rev. Owusu Bempah is alleged to have made during a church service on September 6, 2026.
According to the writ filed by Ohene Gyan & Associates on September 15, 2026, the clergyman allegedly accused Dr Ayew Afriyie and other NPP figures, including Anthony Abayifa Karbo, Sammy Awuku and Opare Ansah, of being involved in a plan to mobilise individuals to attack his church.
The court documents indicate that Rev. Owusu Bempah allegedly claimed that two busloads of people had been brought from the Ashanti Region to Accra as part of an alleged attempt to storm the premises of his church.
Dr Ayew Afriyie, however, denies the allegations and argues that the statements were false, malicious and damaging to his reputation.
The lawsuit further states that the MP initially sought a retraction after the allegations were circulated on social media.
According to the court filing, rather than withdrawing the alleged statements, Rev. Owusu Bempah subsequently repeated and defended his position during a media programme hosted by K-Lover Media.
The pastor is alleged to have challenged the lawmaker and the other individuals mentioned to take the matter to court, indicating that he is prepared to face them through the legal process.
Dr Ayew Afriyie has consequently turned to the High Court, arguing that the statements have exposed him to reputational damage in his professional, political and public capacities.
The Effiduase-Asokore MP is seeking GH¢10 million in general damages over what he considers defamatory publications and statements.
His lawyers contend that the allegations have adversely affected his reputation among constituents, political associates and supporters.
The suit also asks the court to order Rev. Owusu Bempah and the church’s trustees to issue a retraction and an unqualified apology.
The plaintiff wants the apology and retraction to be published daily for 14 consecutive days across the same media platforms through which the alleged defamatory statements were disseminated.
In addition to the financial compensation, Dr Ayew Afriyie is asking the court to permanently restrain the defendants from making or publishing further statements that are defamatory of him.
He is also seeking an order for the defendants to bear the costs associated with the litigation.
The defendants named in the action are Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah and the trustees of Glorious Word Power Ministry International.
The court has directed the defendants to enter an appearance within eight days after being served with the writ.
The allegations contained in the suit remain matters for determination by the court.
