The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, Gyamfi Christian, in connection with a suspected fake gold syndicate operating in the Berekum Municipality.

The suspect was arrested on August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District following intelligence-led investigations into a reported gold scam involving GH¢1.1 million.

The case was reported to the Police by Christopher Awuni, 29, a gold aggregator, who told investigators that four men claiming to be gold sellers had sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.

According to the Police, the gold was subsequently tested and found to be fake. The suspected counterfeit gold has since been retained as an exhibit as investigations continue.

During interrogation, Gyamfi Christian allegedly admitted his involvement in the transaction and disclosed that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.

The suspect further identified three other alleged members of the syndicate as Abraham, alias “Frenchman”, who is said to be the leader of the group, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar.

The three accomplices are currently at large, prompting the Police to intensify efforts to locate and arrest them.

Preliminary investigations have also uncovered another alleged case involving the same group. The Police said the suspects are believed to have defrauded another victim of GH¢1.4 million in Drobo earlier this year.

The latest development brings the total amount allegedly lost by the two identified victims to at least GH¢2.5 million.

The Police have urged members of the public, particularly individuals involved in the gold trade, to exercise caution and conduct the necessary verification before entering into gold transactions to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.

Gyamfi Christian remains in Police custody and is assisting investigators as the Bono Regional Police Command works to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged syndicate and apprehend the remaining suspects.
