The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a suspected armed robbery gang linked to a string of violent attacks in the Upper East Region, following an intelligence-led operation conducted on April 29, 2026.
Four suspects, Awudu Kasim, Malik Baako, Mohammed Amidu, and Wadud Abdul were arrested at their hideout in Zuarungu.
Police say a search at the location uncovered a G3 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
The weapon had reportedly been concealed in the storage compartment of a motorbike believed to have been stolen by suspect Samsudeen Mohammed and an accomplice identified only as “DJ,” who remains at large.
Officers also retrieved seven additional motorbikes suspected to have been stolen.
According to investigators, the suspects confessed during interrogation to participating in multiple robbery operations across the region.
These include a February 4, 2026 attack along the Zuarungu–Kongo road, where a bus driver, Ussif Abdul Razak, sustained gunshot injuries and lost three fingers.
The group also admitted involvement in a separate robbery targeting a cargo truck driver, Mohammed Ibrahim, on the same stretch.
Police further linked the suspects to a March 28, 2026 robbery at a mining site in Gbane, where a miner, Atani Mark, was reportedly attacked and robbed of cash and gold, along with other incidents in surrounding communities.
Two other suspects, Samsudeen Mohammed and Seidu Safianu, were fatally injured during the operation after sustaining gunshot wounds.
Their bodies have since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The four arrested suspects remain in custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
Meanwhile, police say efforts are underway to apprehend other members of the gang, including the suspect known as “DJ.”
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to pursuing all individuals connected to the criminal network and bringing them to justice.
