President John Dramani Mahama is set to make history this week as the first sitting Ghanaian Head of State to address the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR).
The President departs Accra on Sunday, March 1, heading to Arusha, Tanzania, where he will serve as the Special Guest of Honour for the official opening of the 2026 Judicial Year.
This year’s ceremony holds particular significance as it doubles as the official launch of the 20th Anniversary of the African Court.
Established to protect the fundamental rights of citizens across the continent, the court has chosen a theme that reflects its two-decade journey.
The invitation marks a high point in Ghana’s diplomatic standing, highlighting the nation’s historical commitment to the African Union’s judicial institutions.
Beyond the courtroom, the visit serves to strengthen bilateral ties between West and East Africa.
President Mahama is scheduled to hold private talks with his Tanzanian counterpart, Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, to discuss matters of regional cooperation and mutual interest.
In accordance with Article 60(8) of the Constitution, the Vice President will act as President and perform the functions of the Commander-in-Chief while Mr. Mahama is away.
The President is expected to return to Ghana immediately following the conclusion of the Monday program.
