The owner and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the beloved and popular local eatery on the Nkawkaw stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region, known as the Abossey Okai Chop Bar, has passed away.

Mr Jonathan K. Amakye died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after a short illness. He was 70 years old.

The 40-day observation of his passing will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Abossey Okai New Site.

The entrepreneur, popularly known as Nana Amakye, owned and operated the well-known Abossey Okai Chop Bar at Mpraeso Amanfrom. He will be remembered for his generosity and for feeding countless people over the years.

The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown.

The Abossey Okai Chop Bar has operated for more than 27 years and has become a landmark roadside eatery in the area. It is located just off the main road near Nkawkaw, making it a prominent stop for travellers journeying between Accra and Kumasi.

The establishment is best known for serving traditional Ghanaian dishes, particularly freshly pounded fufu accompanied by light soup and a variety of meats.

Historically, the chop bar also served bushmeat, including antelope and grasscutter. However, in recent years, the establishment moved away from selling endangered game.

The late owner subsequently shifted from supplying bushmeat to becoming an advocate for wildlife protection. As part of this effort, a large awareness billboard and educational posters warning against pangolin poaching were mounted at the site.

Nana Amakye, who managed and operated the popular eatery for many years, built deep personal connections with both travellers and members of the local community.

His death in August 2026 has left customers, friends and members of the community mourning the loss of a well-known entrepreneur whose establishment had become a familiar stop along the Accra-Kumasi highway.
