Two Ghanaian soldiers are in critical condition following a missile attack on the Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) Headquarters in Southern Lebanon.
The incident occurred on Friday March 6, during intensifying exchanges between the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed in an official statement that the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) base was hit by two separate missiles between 17:45 and 17:52 local time.
The attack resulted in immediate casualties and significant structural damage to the base.
Two soldiers sustained critical injuries, while a third is suffering from severe trauma.
The Officers’ Mess facility was directly hit and has been completely destroyed by fire.
The injured personnel are currently being stabilized at a Level One Medical Bunker.
Plans are already in motion to evacuate them to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for advanced care.
Despite the “fragile situation,” the GAF has urged the public to remain calm.
Acting Director General of Public Relations, Captain (Ghana Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin, assured families that the remaining troops are currently safe and following standard protection protocols in underground bunkers.
The Government of Ghana has moved swiftly on the diplomatic front.
Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a formal protest has been lodged at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Ghana is calling on all warring parties to respect international law and prioritize the safety of peacekeepers stationed in the region.
The “theatre” of conflict in Southern Lebanon remains highly volatile, and the GAF continues to monitor the situation closely.
”We urge the parties involved to be mindful of their responsibilities regarding the safety of all peacekeepers,” the statement noted.
