The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of one Iddrisu Sumaila and a violent attack on Sambin Halidu, the elected chief of the Tindorunga community under Worinyanga in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service in Bolgatanga on May 28, 2026, the arrests were made following a police operation conducted in Garu on May 26, 2026.
The suspects have been identified as Majeed Bawumya, 34, Milla Justice, 27, and Majeed Awudu, 20.
Police said a team from the Upper East Regional Command moved to assist the district command in tracking down individuals linked to the attacks and subsequent murder.
During a search at the residence of suspect Majeed Bawumya Agbango, also known as “Atan Majeed,” officers reportedly retrieved one BRUNI MOD 92 Cal. 8mmK pistol, several sharp objects, GH¢600.00 cash, and three mobile phones believed to be connected to the crime.
Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that tensions had been building in the Worinyanga area following the selection process for a new chief of the Tindorunga community.
The police explained that about a month ago, kingmakers from Worinyanga presented three candidates, including Sambin Halidu, to the Overlord of Bawku, Naba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azorka II, for vetting and possible enskinment.
However, members of an opposing faction allegedly protested against the election of Sambin Halidu and reportedly threatened to disrupt the planned enskinment ceremony scheduled for May 26, 2026.
Investigators further revealed that on May 25, 2026, suspect Alhassan Sabrina, together with other accomplices currently on the run, allegedly met at the residence of Majeed Bawumya Agbango in Worinyanga where plans were allegedly made to disrupt the ceremony.
The situation reportedly escalated in the early hours of May 26, 2026, at about 3:00 a.m., when the suspects, armed with offensive weapons including a pistol, allegedly stormed the residence of Sambin Halidu and his family while preparations were ongoing for the enskinment ceremony.
Police said the attackers allegedly fired indiscriminately and set ablaze a 4×4 Mitsubishi vehicle with registration number GE 1115-13 belonging to the chief-elect.
The attack is also believed to have resulted in the death of Iddrisu Sumaila, while Sambin Halidu sustained injuries during the incident.
The Police Command stated that investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accomplices currently at large.
The Upper East Regional Police Command has assured residents of the area of its commitment to maintaining peace, security, and law and order in the region.
