The Member of Parliament for Adentan, Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, has donated 3,641 metal desk-chairs to the Adentan Municipal Education Directorate to help address the persistent shortage of classroom furniture in public basic schools.
The donation, which forms part of efforts to improve educational infrastructure in the municipality, is expected to significantly enhance teaching and learning by ensuring that more pupils have comfortable seating in the classroom instead of sitting on the floor.
Speaking to journalists after presenting the furniture, Mr. Ramadan said the initiative fulfills his commitment to improving education in the constituency and providing pupils with a conducive learning environment.

According to him, every child deserves to study in comfort and dignity, stressing that the intervention is aimed at eliminating the furniture deficit while creating conditions that promote better academic performance.
“The goal of this intervention is to provide a better learning environment for our children. Every child deserves to study in comfort and dignity, and we will continue to invest in education to improve academic outcomes,” he stated.
He noted that the desk-chairs would help bridge infrastructure gaps in schools, ease classroom congestion and create a more conducive atmosphere for effective teaching and learning.
The Adentan Municipal Chief Executive, Ella Esinam Christine Nongo, described the donation as consistent with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of strengthening Ghana’s education sector through increased support for local assemblies.
She explained that the President’s decision to allocate 80 percent of the District Assembly Common Fund directly to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) has empowered assemblies to undertake critical development projects, including investments in education.
According to her, education extends beyond constructing classroom blocks, emphasizing that adequate furniture is equally essential to ensuring effective teaching and learning.
She disclosed that the 3,641 metal desk-chairs would be distributed to 35 public schools across the Adentan Municipality.

Hon. Nongo explained that the Assembly deliberately opted for metal furniture instead of wooden ones because of their durability.
She said previous investments in wooden desks often resulted in frequent repairs and replacements, making them less cost-effective.
“When we talk about education, people often think only about classroom buildings. But furniture and everything that makes teaching and learning comfortable are also part of education. That is why we are donating these desks to our schools,” she said.
The MCE indicated that the current distribution represents only the first phase of the intervention.
She explained that since allocations from the District Assembly Common Fund are made quarterly, the Assembly intends to procure additional furniture as more funds become available.
“Our vision is to ensure every electoral area in the Adentan Municipality has a basic school. As we receive subsequent allocations, we will continue providing more furniture to address the remaining deficits,” she added.
She also appealed to school authorities to properly maintain the furniture to ensure they serve pupils for many years.
“I urge the Education Directorate, headteachers and students to take good care of these desks. Proper maintenance will encourage us to continue providing more support in the future,” she stressed.
Receiving the furniture on behalf of the schools, the Adentan Municipal Director of Education, Madam Gifty Mussey, expressed gratitude to both the Member of Parliament and the Municipal Chief Executive for responding to the directorate’s appeal.
She noted that the donation would go a long way in improving classroom conditions and promoting quality education.
According to her, the directorate had conducted a comprehensive needs assessment involving headteachers across the municipality before presenting the furniture challenges to the Assembly.
She said the Assembly responded positively by providing the desks.
“We are so grateful for this donation and we want to assure the MP and the MCE that we will maintain these items properly. Comfortable classrooms with adequate tables and chairs promote effective teaching and learning,” she stated.

Madam Mussey, however, acknowledged that although the donation would substantially reduce the furniture deficit, more desks and chairs would still be needed, particularly ahead of the next academic year when enrolment is expected to increase.
“We want more because it can never be enough. We have completed the current academic year and will soon begin a new one. We expect more learners to enroll, so additional desks, tables and chairs will still be required,” she appealed.
