In a significant turn of events on the floor of Parliament today, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, rendered an unqualified apology to the Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.
The apology follows controversial claims made by the Effutu lawmaker regarding an alleged illegal recruitment processes within the country’s security services.
The friction began during the debate on the State of the Nation Address (SONA), where Mr. Afenyo-Markin made allegations suggesting irregularities or bias in how personnel were being drafted into the security agencies.
Taking exception to these remarks, the Interior Minister formally lodged a complaint with the Speaker of Parliament.
The matter was subsequently referred to the Privileges Committee for investigation into whether the comments breached parliamentary standards or constituted a deliberate spread of misinformation.
During today’s sitting, the Minority Leader chose to settle the matter before the committee concluded its findings.
Addressing the “August House,” Afenyo-Markin officially withdrew the statements and offered a sincere apology to the Asawase lawmaker (Muntaka Mubarak).
”I retract the claims made during my contribution to the State of the Nation Address and render an unqualified apology to my colleague,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
In a display of parliamentary camaraderie, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak accepted the apology.
He noted that as a human being, he “cannot play God” and harbored no ill will once the truth had been established.
To ensure the record was set straight, the Minister requested the 1st Deputy Speaker to formally end the proceedings regarding this dispute and expunge all statements related to the specific allegation from the official records (Hansard).
The 1st Deputy Speaker granted the request, effectively bringing a close to a chapter that had threatened to heighten tensions between the Majority and Minority benches.
