The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region from the national grid following an alleged attack on some of its personnel during a monitoring exercise in the community.
The disconnection has plunged a large section of Gomoa Potsin into darkness for three days, leaving residents, traders and other business operators increasingly concerned about the impact of the power outage on their livelihoods.
The incident reportedly occurred when an ECG monitoring team visited the community as part of an exercise to inspect electricity meters and identify possible irregularities.
According to information available, the team discovered what was described as a faulty electricity meter at a house, leading to an altercation between some residents and the ECG officials.
During the confrontation, one of the ECG staff members was allegedly injured.
Following the incident, the power company disconnected the community from the national grid, apparently as a response to the attack on its personnel.
The prolonged outage has since generated concern among residents, particularly business operators who depend heavily on electricity to operate.
Some residents say the situation is taking a serious toll on their businesses, with some claiming that they are losing income because they are unable to operate normally without electricity.
They have therefore appealed to community leaders, the ECG and other relevant authorities to find an amicable solution to the dispute and restore power to the affected areas.
The Assemblyman for the Potsin Electoral Area, Ebenezer Adams, has condemned the alleged attack on the ECG personnel and appealed to the company to reconsider the decision to disconnect the entire community.
Speaking to 1960news.com, Mr Adams acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and said the alleged assault on the ECG worker could not be condoned.
He pledged to assist the authorities in identifying the individual allegedly responsible for the attack and ensuring that the matter is properly addressed.
The Assemblyman, however, appealed to ECG to reconnect the community while efforts are made to resolve the dispute and deal with the alleged assault.
He expressed concern about the effect of the power outage on ordinary residents and businesses, stressing that the continued blackout was creating significant difficulties for people who depend on electricity for their daily activities.
Some residents have also joined the call for an immediate and peaceful resolution of the matter.
They appealed to the ECG and community leaders to engage one another and find a solution that would allow electricity supply to be restored.
According to the residents, the three-day blackout has disrupted normal life in the community and created serious challenges for businesses.
Business owners, in particular, say they are struggling to keep their operations running in the absence of electricity, with some warning that continued power outages could result in further financial losses.
The residents also expressed concern that the actions of a few individuals should not leave the wider community without electricity for an extended period.
They are therefore urging all parties to cooperate with the relevant authorities to resolve the dispute, while ensuring that anyone found culpable in the alleged attack is dealt with through the appropriate processes.
The situation remains a source of concern in Gomoa Potsin as residents await a resolution that could pave the way for the restoration of electricity supply to the community.
