Ghana Water Limited has announced the temporary shutdown of the Kpeve Water Treatment Plant in the Volta Region following extremely high turbidity levels in its raw water source caused by recent heavy rains.
In a press release issued on Monday, May 18, the management of the company explained that the worsening condition of the water source has made water treatment unsafe and operationally unfeasible.
According to the statement, the current turbidity levels have exceeded the acceptable operational threshold required for safe and effective treatment of water at the facility.
Management noted that the ongoing rains have significantly increased the movement of sediments, silt and other pollutants into the water source, forcing authorities to suspend operations at the treatment plant until conditions improve.
The company also expressed serious concern about construction and other human activities taking place dangerously close to the intake point of the Kpeve Treatment Plant.
Management warned that such developments pose a major threat to the sustainability, safety and reliability of water production in the area.
It stressed that the impact of these activities goes beyond periods of heavy rainfall, indicating that recreational and construction-related activities around the intake area could continuously affect water quality and create operational challenges for the treatment plant.
Ghana Water Limited is therefore calling on relevant authorities, environmental protection agencies, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to urgently intervene to protect the Kpeve water source from further encroachment and environmental degradation.
The company apologised to consumers for the inconvenience caused by the temporary shutdown and assured the public that technical teams are closely monitoring the situation.
Management indicated that water production will resume immediately after turbidity levels return to safe and manageable levels.
Consumers in affected areas have meanwhile been advised to use available water sparingly during the period of disruption.
The company reiterated its commitment to delivering safe, reliable and sustainable water supply to consumers across the region.
