The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the government is taking steps to relocate a Ghanaian national from South Africa following what he described as an unwarranted xenophobic attack.

The minister has disclosed that the individual, Emmanuel Asamoah, who is legally residing in South Africa, has been subjected to threats from a fringe vigilante group.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, he has personally spoken with Mr. Asamoah, who remains in stable condition despite what he described as “incessant threats.”

The government, he noted, has decided to evacuate him from South Africa to ensure his safety.

“We are taking him out of South Africa,” the Minister stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaian citizens abroad.

Mr. Ablakwa also commended the South African authorities for their swift and reassuring response to the situation.

He specifically referenced a statement issued by the country’s Police Minister, Firoz Cachalia, which he said had provided assurances regarding the safety of foreign nationals.

The Minister emphasized that the protection of Ghanaians, both at home and abroad, remains a top priority for the government.

“No Ghanaian will be abandoned in harm’s way,” he stressed.

He further expressed optimism that the incident would not strain diplomatic ties, adding that Ghana-South Africa relations should continue to grow stronger in the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
