The Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has issued a formal statement of solidarity to internationally acclaimed artist Ibrahim Mahama following reports of a recent assault.
The letter, which blends official condemnation with personal concern, arrives at a time when Mahama’s influence on the global art stage is at an all-time high.
The Minister did not mince words regarding the incident, labeling it a “cowardly act” that undermines the dignity of one of Ghana’s most prominent cultural icons.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to the rule of law, Hon. Gomashie revealed that the matter has already been escalated to the highest levels of national security.
”I have held discussions with the Hon. Minister for the Interior, who has assured me of his utmost support in unravelling the people behind this,” the Minister stated, ensuring that the incident is being met with “the seriousness it deserves.”
Ibrahim Mahama is best known for his monumental installations and the creation of the Red Clay Studio in Tamale.
His work, which often uses jute sacks and reclaimed materials to explore themes of labor and globalization, has transformed Ghana into a hub for contemporary art.
The Ministry’s statement emphasized that Mahama’s safety is a matter of national interest.
Beyond the legalities, the Minister offered a heartfelt message of strength to the artist, affirming that the entire creative sector stands behind him during his recovery.
”Your priceless contributions to the creative sector remain of utmost importance to Ghana and the world,” the letter concluded, signing off with a wish for Mahama’s full and speedy recovery.
